The Pediatric Neurogastroenterology and Motility Program is ready to expand to the Plano Campus. A dedicated nursing position is required before the program is started to ensure high-quality studies and patient safety/satisfaction.

Summary

This position provides comprehensive patient care and support for specialists conducting procedures for children and families with gastrointestinal motility disorders. Assist in performing all aspects of GI motility procedures at the Plano Campus with future support of the Dallas campus. Independently performs the functions of a registered nurse in direct patient care. Utilizes the nursing process in the delivery of developmentally appropriate care. Also works in collaboration with other health care professionals to provide a comprehensive plan of care to meet the patient/family needs.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible and accountable for prescribing, delegating and coordinating patient care. Uses clinical judgment based on nursing skills acquired through formal and informal experiential knowledge and evidence-based guidelines to globally assess the patient's situation and through critical thinking and clinical decision making, develop an appropriate plan of care for the patient, with the aim of promoting comfort.
  • Accountable that patient care meets standards of safety, effectiveness, patient rights and guest relations.
  • Oversees care delivered by patient care team, coordinates plan of care.
  • Provides education and facilitates learning for patients, families, and patient care teams in a way that demonstrates a sensitivity to recognize, appreciate, and incorporate differences related to diversity.
  • Collaborates with physicians, families and other healthcare professionals to assist in developing and implementing an appropriate plan of care in a way that promotes/encourages each person's contributions towards achieving the best patient outcomes.
  • Advocates for the patient, represents the concerns of the patient/family and identifies and assists in resolving ethical and clinical concerns.
  • Accurately & thoroughly document all patient encounters in EPIC.
  • Ensure that Patient Health Information (PHI) is protected and always secured.
  • Adhere to all infection prevention initiatives (i.e., hand hygiene, proper disposal of waste, etc.)
  • Deliver competent and skilled care to patients and families according to their identified needs.
  • Will deliver care with team-orientation, an emphasis on good customer relations, sound clinical judgment and appropriate decision-making abilities that take into consideration evidence-based practice.
  • Continuously inquires about the condition of the patient through the ongoing process of questioning and evaluating the situation and implement treatment changes, if necessary, through collaboration with the health care team, inclusive of the patient and family.
  • Maintains a body of knowledge and tools that allow the nurse to manage whatever environmental and system resources exist for the patient/family, within or across healthcare and non-healthcare systems.

Motility Specific

  • Training for motility procedures technical aspect will be provided.
  • Call patients scheduled for motility procedures prior to procedures with instructions including what to bring and what to expect during the procedure
  • coordinate with motility team and inpatient team regarding patients to be admitted for long procedures (colonic and antrodeuodenal manometry) needing overnight hospital stays
  • develop “super-user” level expertise in the use, care and maintenance of manometry equipment and devices
  • calibrate motility equipment prior to procedures
  • perform motility procedure independently
  • clean up artifacts in studies prior to saving
  • save study to appropriate folder for interpretation by specialist
  • clean and inspect motility equipment for wear and tear and performance
  • trouble shoot motility equipment - in coordination with vendor and motility team
  • keep an accurate log of motility procedures and reconcile with studies saved in folders
  • send log at the end of the week to motility team physicians for QC and interpretation
  • Quality check to ensure studies are read in 14 business days
  • Develop or individualize teaching plans/protocols to meet patient and family learning needs.
  • Identifies patient preferences and needs including motivation to learn.
  • Communicate with physicians, technicians, and other multidisciplinary divisions.
  • Triages phone calls and inbox messages in the electronic medical records related to motility procedures and answers them when appropriate.
  • Works with inpatient teams to coordinate motility procedures.
  • Educates families on procedures and interventions.
  • Performs nursing assessments utilizing several methods and/or area-specific tools.

Essential

  • BSN in Nursing
  • PALS/NRP/ACLS/BLS (Department specific requirements)
  • At least 2 years of nursing experience required.
  • Pediatric and/or GI experience preferred.
  • Effective April 20, 2020, new employees must obtain PACES certification within 6 months of hire and existing employees must obtain PACES certification upon expiration of their PEARS certification (no later than April 20, 2022). (Department specific requirement - see addendum)
